Maranatha’s Music Department recently revealed the victors of the annual Instrumental Commencement Contest for 2024. The competition, overseen by adjudicator Reid LaDew, showcased the talents of instrumentalists, pianists, and vocalists alike.

Charis Dwire emerged as the winner of the instrumental contest, captivating the audience with her rendition of the "Violin Concerto Mvt. 1" by Conus. Accompanied by Abigail Boorujy, Dwire, a Music Major specializing in Arranging and String Pedagogy, claimed the top spot. LaDew commended her performance, stating, "Dwire’s performance of the Conus Violin Concerto was exceptional in its musicality and nuance."

Following closely behind, Gabriella Moore secured the runner-up position with her rendition of "Violin Concerto No. 2, Mvt. 3" by Wieniawski, accompanied by Allie Morken. Moore, also a Music Major focusing on String Performance and String Pedagogy, demonstrated her musical prowess during the competition.

Reflecting on the overall event, LaDew expressed his admiration for the participants, declaring, "What an exceptional evening of music making! All of the soloists did a wonderful job bringing such a variety of classical music to life."

In addition to Dwire and Moore, the winners of the Piano and Voice Commencement Contest will have the opportunity to record their performances for a professional video on Wednesday.

Adjudicator Reid LaDew, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse with a background in Instrumental Music Education, has been an integral part of the Watertown Music Staff since 2007.
